Return to How a coal-fired power plant generates electricity.
(9) Turbine
The steam, at a pressure of 2,400 pounds per square inch, drives blades in the
turbine that drive the generator.
(10) Generator
Inside the 420,000-kilowatt generator a huge spinning magnet
is surrounded by copper wire coils.
The coils spin, creating a magnetic field that creates a flow of electric current. Electricity leaves the generator at 24,000 volts.
