An Otter Tail Company

Environmental commitment

Our environmental policy:

Otter Tail Power Company will comply with all environmental laws. If no law exists or if the law does not protect the environment, the company will set and adhere to stringent standards of its own.

Our employees and many shareholders call our service area home. We are known for our work ethic, honesty, and stewardship of the area's natural resources. In addition to complying with the existing environmental regulatory requirements, Otter Tail Power Company strives to go a step beyond.

  • Read about the principles our company believes policy makers must consider regarding climate change and the actions we've taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Learn about the electricity you buy from us. Read this brochure (pdf) about our fuel sources, air emissions, and choices you can make to save money and help the environment.
  • The use of ash generated by our coal-burning units not only saves landfill space, it also provides materials for other industries. For example, bottom ash is used in the manufacture of roofing material. Permitted construction applications include feedlot soil stabilization and amended Class 5 aggregate for roadbed and parking lot subgrade stabilization.
  • In cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, we established a small-mouth bass fishery on the Otter Tail River.
  • Emission of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide for each kilowatt-hour of electricity generated has been reduced by more than 40 percent since 1990.
  • Participation in research through the University of North Dakota's Energy and Environmental Research Center has advanced our understanding of the formation, emission, and transport of mercury emissions.
