Home energy makeover winner in Rothsay's Community Energy Challenge

As part of its Community Energy Challenge in Rothsay, Minnesota, Otter Tail Power Company has selected one homeowner to receive a free home energy makeover valued at $12,000. On June 2 members of the company's Community Energy Challenge team visited winning homeowner Jeanette Geer to announce that she is the winner.
"This makeover will be similar to the home makeovers you see on TV except that ours will focus on making the Geer home more energy efficient to help achieve the Community Energy Challenge goal of saving between 10 percent and 15 percent of Rothsay's energy use," said Senior Market Planning Specialist Brenda Sandahl.
Geer was selected from among 27 applicants, who had to sign Rothsay's Energy Pledge and complete a free home energy audit to be eligible to win the makeover.
"Now we'll do a review audit to determine which energy-efficiency measures will be most cost-effective for the Geer home," said Sandahl. She indicated that those measures probably would include wall and rim joist insulation, door replacement, and a new heating system to help lower the home's high energy index, which was one of the determining factors in its selection.
"Our plan is to have the work completed in time for the next heating season," said Sandahl. "Then we'll monitor and study the home for energy savings, followed by five years of verification. Otter Tail Power Company likely will use the Geer home as a case study."
