Appleton - Canby Transmission Line
Otter Tail Power Company is the sole owner of the 42-mile electric transmission line between a substation in Appleton, Minnesota, and a substation in Canby, Minnesota. The line is operating at 41.6 kv, but about 20 miles of it is capable of operating at 115 kv. See a map (pdf) of the Appleton to Canby 115 kv corridor.
Growing demand for electricity in the Appleton-Canby area has created a need for additional transmission capacity. Otter Tail Power Company has reported this situation in the 2003 and 2005 Biennial Transmission Project Reports that are filed with state regulators. You can view them on the Minnesota Electric Transmission Planning web site.
In April 2007 the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission granted the Certificate of Need and Route Permit. Construction begins in June 2007.
