Bemidji, with a population of 13,000, is in Beltrami County in north central Minnesota, 100 miles south of the Canadian border and 230 miles north of Minneapolis/St. Paul. More than 400 lakes within 25 miles of Bemidji as well as state and national parks in the area provide hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, hiking, and various other recreation. The average annual snowfall is 41 inches, and the average annual rainfall is 22 inches.
Bemidji has 30 manufacturing establishments. The principal products manufactured in the Bemidji area include lumber and wood products including plywood and hardboard, machines, steel culverts, computer components, woolens, concrete blocks, garage doors, signs, printing, wood furnaces, and fishing tackle. Major highways include U.S. Highway 71 north and south and U.S. Highway 2 east and west. Several truck lines provide freight service. Greyhound Bus Lines provides passenger service. Mesaba/Northwest Airlines provides daily flights to and from Minneapolis/St. Paul.
