Governor Hoeven proclaims August 25 as Pay It Forward Day

Jamestown, North Dakota - August 25, 2009

This morning Governor John Hoeven officially proclaimed August 25 as Otter Tail Power Company Pay It Forward Day in North Dakota. “Otter Tail Power Company continues its 100-year emphasis on paying it forward for future generations by constructing a greenhouse at the Anne Carlsen Center in Jamestown and contributing to the vocational, education, emotional, and physical development of the Center’s students,” said Hoeven during a press conference highlighting the company’s 100th anniversary pay-it-forward gift to the Anne Carlsen Center.

Otter Tail Power Company contributed financial support and technical advice toward constructing an energy-efficient solarium/greenhouse on the Anne Carlsen Center campus. The building is a gathering place where students share lessons in science, math, and language; celebrate the environment by planting, tending, and harvesting flowers, fruits, and vegetables; and practice energy conservation with proper insulation, a super-efficient air-source heat pump, and a thermal-storage underfloor heating system.

“This greenhouse is one way we’re helping to pay it forward to the Jamestown area, the state of North Dakota, and future generations,” said Chuck MacFarlane, Otter Tail Power Company president. “I want to thank the Anne Carlsen Center for its ongoing commitment to social, economic, and environmental stewardship—and for helping to commemorate Otter Tail Power Company’s 100 years of service.”

“Otter Tail Power Company has contributed generously to our solarium and gardening program, and its employees have taken a heartfelt interest in our students and their accomplishments. The Anne Carlsen Center is truly blessed by their partnership with us, as we work together to empower individuals with disabilities and provide each person with meaningful, life-changing experiences,” said Eric Monson, Anne Carlsen Center Interim CEO.

“To pay it forward means that when you receive a thoughtful gift or gesture you return the kindness by giving to others,” said Cris Kling, Otter Tail Power Company’s director of public relations. “Part of our mission is to improve the quality of life in the areas in which we do business much as the Anne Carlsen Center is improving the quality of life for countless children and young adults. We’re honored to pay it forward while enhancing the center’s ability to provide therapy and education for its students.”

The Anne Carlsen Center provides residential, therapeutic, and education services for children and young adults with disabilities and conditions that include autism, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, and medical fragility. Its staff also provides compassion, training, services, and support in homes and communities across North Dakota.

On April 9, 1909, Otter Tail Power Company provided electricity to its first customer. This pay-it-forward event is part of the company’s 100th anniversary commemoration in its North Dakota service area. This is the third pay-it-forward event for Otter Tail Power Company. The company hosted events in South Dakota and Minnesota earlier this year.

In addition to these events, Otter Tail Power Company is hosting open house celebrations at each of its customer service centers and is offering Ollie the Otter appearances, holding employee celebrations, and conducting book signings of its Ollie’s Otter Tail River Adventure children’s book. Dates, times, and locations of these and other events are posted on the company’s anniversary website www.otpco100.com
