Children’s book will be donated to 400 elementary schools

Fergus Falls, Minnesota - October 20, 2009

In 2009 Otter Tail Power Company is celebrating 100 years as an operating electric utility. Under the anniversary theme of ON for generations, the company is paying tribute to the past, present, and future by remembering its roots, giving thanks, and paying it forward.

As part of its efforts to pay it forward, the company published a children’s book titled Ollie’s Otter Tail River Adventure, featuring the company’s mascot, Ollie the Otter. The story, written at an early-elementary reading level, documents Ollie’s journey to the head of the Otter Tail River. In special sections throughout the book kids learn how easy it is to pay it forward—to give back by helping someone, with the goal that perhaps they, in turn, will help someone else.

This week marks the official launch of the company’s book tour. Local author Tim Rundquist, illustrator Todd Ouren (originally from Erhard), and star of the book Ollie the Otter, are visiting Fergus Falls elementary schools. Rundquist will share his inspiration for the story and help to encourage reading at all ages. Ouren will walk students through the steps of sketching Ollie the Otter. And Ollie will join his friends in introducing the book.

The fun doesn’t end in Fergus Falls. Otter Tail Power Company is donating a copy of Ollie’s Otter Tail River Adventure to each elementary school in its service area. That’s nearly 400 copies that will be on the shelves of school libraries in our region. Employees and retirees will be reading the book in as many schools as possible. If a representative is unavailable for a particular school, the company will mail the book to the school’s library.

“Ollie’s Otter Tail River Adventure is one way our company can reach out to young people,” said Cris Kling, Otter Tail Power Company’s director of public relations. “This book encourages literacy and social responsibility at a young age, in a fun way.”

The company will host a book signing at Victor Lundeen Company in Fergus Falls on Friday, October 23, from 3:30 to 5:30. Books are available at Victor Lundeen Company and at the company’s Customer Service Centers at Fergus Falls, Crookston, Bemidji, and Morris in Minnesota; at Wahpeton, Oakes, Devils Lake, Rugby, Garrison, and Jamestown in North Dakota; and at Milbank, South Dakota.
