An Otter Tail Company

Disconnecting your electrical service during a natural disaster

Otter Tail Power Company will disconnect the electrical service to a customer or customers during a natural disaster, such as flood, fire, tornado, etc., under the following conditions:

  • At the request of a community emergency response unit representative (Fire Department, Police Department, National Guard, etc).
  • At a customer's request.
  • Upon identification of a hazardous situation or condition by Otter Tail Power Company personnel.

Note: When feasible, Otter Tail Power Company will disconnect only accounts that are affected by the disaster. When not feasible to disconnect an individual customer by pulling the meter or cutting the specific service, it may be necessary to open a switch or service connection that may affect other customers that are not directly affected by the disaster or hazard at that time; e.g., floodwater or fire that would not permit the utility representative to gain access directly to the service connection or meter.

When feasible Otter Tail Power Company personnel will isolate the individually affected customer(s) and restore service as soon as safe and possible to the other customers.

We will restore service for the customer whose electrical service was disconnected because of hazards at their facility when conditions are met.
