Starting electric service

Please submit this request at least 48 hours prior to the date service is required

  • Requests are handled Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. In the case of an emergency situation, call 800-257-4044 for immediate assistance.
  • Who is eligible: You must be 18 or older and live at the residence where you are requesting electric service be started.
  • Connection fees: The $15 customer connection charge is a one-time charge that helps cover the cost of setting up your new electric service account.
  • Deposits: New Otter Tail Power Company customers or previous customers who have a good credit history with us do not have to pay a security deposit. Previous customers have a good credit history if they've had fewer than three disconnect notices and haven't had service disconnected for not paying an electric bill within the last 12 months. If we collect a deposit, it will be based on two months' average bill.
  • Late payment charge: We send itemized electric service statements monthly. Electric service bills not paid by the next billing date may be subject to a late payment charge. A late payment charge will apply on any account with an unpaid balance greater than $10.00, if the customer has been delinquent more than once during the last 12 consecutive months. The maximum late payment charge shall be 1.5% per month (18% per year) or a minimum fee of $1.00, whichever is greater.
  • How to end electric service: When you no longer need electric service, you will need to submit an online stop service request or call 800-257-4044 to request service be discontinued in your name.
  • Responsibility for paying your bill: Otter Tail Power Company is obligated to supply service to new customers; however, Otter Tail Power Company does have certain guidelines to assure payment. This is only fair to our customers and to the company. We provide many payment programs and options. If a situation occurs where you are unable to pay your bill, please contact customer service at 800-257-4044 and we will gladly discuss a payment plan for you.
