Otter Impact

Partnering with our communities for more than a century

Growing and succeeding together

We live our values by consistently stepping up in our communities—generously giving and actively engaging to make our Otter Impact.

Actively engaging

In the hearts of our communities, we’re lending a helping hand—serving on boards of directors, organizing fundraisers, volunteering our time and skills, and generously giving to make our Otter Impact.

Ollie in the community.

Generously giving

By donating food, supplies, and funds, we consistently support organizations within our service area. To further individual giving efforts, our company donates to these organizations too.

And we annually support the Children’s Miracle Network and United Way through our drives.

  • Our 2020 Children's Miracle Network campaign raised just under $9,400, including $3,000 of company matching dollars.
  • Combined with our company’s $15,250 match, our employees recently raised a total of $46,919.36 for the United Way of Otter Tail & Wadena Counties. We surpassed our giving goal and had more than 50 new donors and donated 20 books to children in our communities.

Employee involvement

Using their time and skills, our employees actively engage in a wide range of nonprofit organizations and charitable causes.

Rebecca

BIO Girls

Rebecca is an Otter Tail Power Company employee and mother of two young girls. In 2016 she registered her oldest daughter for BIO Girls, a program that improves the self-esteem of adolescent girls through empowerment of self and service to others. By 2019, both of her daughters were enjoying the program—and Rebecca had become the site director. The people of Otter Tail Power Company are consistently showing up to support their communities. In fact, three of Rebecca’s colleagues, Lynn, Kristen, and Stephanie, have been involved in BIO Girls too.

Nick

Pedal Fergus Falls

Nick, an Otter Tail Power Company employee and avid biker and trail runner, moved to Fergus Falls, Minnesota, in March 2020. He previously was involved with trail organizations, and Pedal Fergus Falls was the perfect opportunity to get involved in the Fergus Falls area. Realizing how much work goes into maintaining the trail systems, he wanted to use that as a an avenue to bring people together. For the past few years, there had been less upkeep of Ferber Park, so Nick started mowing trails every couple weeks and organized volunteer trail days. Volunteers put in approximately 100 hours at the park throughout the summer. "It's amazing how much more work you can get done with a bunch of incredible people from the community helping out," he said. Nick met many who had discovered the park for the first time and it was a great way to see the efforts rewarded. He looks forward to continue building on what their group has accomplished.

Caring for our communities

Our Foundation gives approximately $500,000 a year to strengthen communities across our service area.

The Otter Tail Power Company Foundation offers funds to support young minds through scholarships, invests in our current and future workforce, creates vibrant culture and vital communities, improves health and human services, and protects our natural resources. In 2020 our Foundation gave $353,870 to strengthen communities across our three-state, 70,000 square-mile service area. This map shows all of the areas where we’ve made a direct impact during the past two years.

Community organizations served

There are so many organizations in our communities making a big difference in the lives of others. Our donations have helped local organizations fund medical and safety supplies, build homes for those in need, fund student scholarships, support local art, recreation, and nature facilities, provide meals for those who are hungry, and educate young minds among many other efforts.

"Thank you for your recent gift to the Minnesota West Foundation in support of electrician and Powerline scholarships at Minnesota West Community and Technical College! Your donation will help us to continue to provide the financial resources students need in order to pursue their technical career goals."

"Thank you for making a difference in the lives of young men and young women served by the Northern Lights Council. [Your gift] built confidence, competence, character, caring and connection for more than 8,700 young people. Because of you, they are now prepared to face life's challenges more effectively."

"Thank you very much! Your donation enriches the educational experiences of students in the Fergus Falls Public Schools."

"We greatly appreciate the donation and it will be used to purchase iPads. This donation will ensure our students have access to their coursework."

"Thank you so much for the grant your gave toward our 12-Lead [EKG machine] and LUCAS project [CPR device]. Your donation will help many people in the community!"

"What a pleasure it is to thank you for your generous gift and support of The Salvation Army. We are overwhelmed when we think of how many lives will be changed because of your support. While our numbers continue to steadily grow, because of your gift we can continue to serve our neighbors that have been greatly impacted by COVID-19."

“Thank you for your generous gift to the University of Jamestown, designated for the Football/Track Renovation. Your gift has a positive impact on our students and our entire campus community. So very thankful we are here at UJ as you’ve joined this project and the community impact this will have!”
