CFL Safety and Disposal

Compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) and other fluorescent lamps contain very small amounts of mercury sealed within the glass tubing that's harmful to the environment. Rather than dispose of burned-out fluorescent lamps in your household trash, take them to a local recycling center for reuse. If a fluorescent bulb breaks, follow the EPA’s recommendations for clean-up and disposal. You also can call the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency at 800-657-3864 for proper disposal information.

To recycle CFLs take them to a Home Depot or one of the centers listed below. Visit Earth911 for additional information on recycling centers in your area. Recycling usually is free of charge.
