Water Heating

Control your water heater and save

The Controlled Service Water Heating Rate offers two ways to save on your water heating costs—a monthly water heating credit with a simple low-cost connection process—or our discounted water heating controlled service rate for locations with a secondary meter and service panel. Both options let us control energy during peak periods while lowering your energy bill.

For customers with an off-peak heating system, adding your water heater to that meter for the same low discounted price is another cost effective option.

How it works

Water heating credit
The water heating credit is a way to save money on your water heating costs without having to install a separate meter and service panel. You’ll need to have an electrician connect your electric water heater to your existing general service meter and provide a wire for us to use to make a connection. Then, we’ll install a radio receiver at no additional cost.

During peak energy periods, we’ll signal the receiver to control energy to your water heater. Once the peak period has passed, it returns to normal operation. For participating in energy control, you’ll receive an average credit of $8 on your monthly bill. (Amount is prorated according to days in the billing cycle.)

Water heating controlled service rate
You’ll need to have an electrician connect your electric water heater to an off-peak electrical service panel and provide a wire for us to use to make a connection. Then, we’ll install a radio receiver at no additional cost.

During peak energy periods, we’ll signal your meter to control energy to your water heater. Once the peak period has passed, we'll restore normal service. The water heating controlled service rate gives you greater cost savings on your water heating (you’ll save about 25% on your water heating costs, compared to our standard electric rates), while helping us manage the electric system during peak periods.

For the greatest savings, customers with off-peak heating may add an electric water heater to their heating service panel to take advantage of one of our other low off-peak rates, including Deferred Load, Dual Fuel, or Residential Demand Control.

Program eligibility and details

Our water heating credit and controlled service rate cannot be combined—you must choose one or the other. We may control service for a maximum of 14 hours a day, but we include recovery periods whenever possible during longer control events.

Rebates available

If you don’t currently have an electric water heater or are planning to replace your current system and would like to take advantage of off-peak savings, rebates are available.
