North Dakota Public Service Commission approves Jamestown to Ellendale transmission line

JETx supports reliable, low-cost electricity

On June 24, 2026 the North Dakota Public Service Commission approved a Certificate of Corridor Compatibility and Route Permit for the Jamestown to Ellendale transmission line (JETx). Once built, JETx will enhance reliability, increase resiliency to extreme weather events, reduce transmission congestion, and increase access to low-cost energy.

“At the heart of our mission is commitment to the customers and communities we serve across North Dakota,” said Todd Wahlund, president of Otter Tail Power Company. “We appreciate the Commission’s thoughtful and thorough review. Their decision reinforces the importance of investing in the infrastructure needed to deliver reliable service and keep electricity costs as low as possible for the families, farms, and businesses that count on us every day.”

According to Garret Senger, chief utilities officer of Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. (MDU), this approval is a significant step in preparing North Dakota’s energy future.“A resilient electric grid requires long‑range planning and strong partnerships, and we appreciate the Commission’s thorough review. The JETx line strengthens the system our customers rely on every day, helping us continue to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective electricity as communities grow and energy needs evolve.”

North Dakota relies on a strong electric grid to power homes, farms, schools, and businesses every day. According to project partners, JETx helps enhance reliability and connect the electric grid across the region. As communities grow and energy needs evolve, providing reliable, low-cost electricity remains a top priority for our company and MDU today.

Strengthening North Dakota’s electric grid

The JETx transmission line will create a high‑voltage loop between existing substations, providing an additional pathway for electricity to flow if other lines are out of service. This added flexibility is designed to strengthen the backbone of the electric grid and help maintain reliable service during peak times, severe weather, or unexpected outages.

By planning ahead and enhancing the transmission system now, the utilities can continue providing reliable electricity when customers need it most while helping manage long-term costs.

Next steps

Along with MDU we'll continue working closely with landowners, local leaders, and communities along the approved route as the project moves into construction planning. The companies remain committed to transparency and ongoing communication. Landowners impacted by the project will continue to be engaged directly as planning progresses and prior to the start of construction. Once in service, the JETx transmission line is designed to help strengthen North Dakota’s electric grid—supporting the people, businesses, and communities that depend on it.
