Adjustable-speed drive rebates

Improve induction motor efficiency and performance—and qualify for rebates.

Use only the energy needed with adjustable-speed drives

The best way to make an induction motor more efficient is to give it the capability to slow down. An adjustable-speed drive does just that—adjusting motor speed to match load need.

Adjustable-speed drives (ASD)—also known as variable-speed drives, variable-frequency drives, or variable-frequency inverters—modify or control motor operation to speed up and slow down based on current loads. This means:

  • Improvements in efficiency, as motors use only the energy they need.
  • Potential for drastically reduced electricity costs—a 50% reduction in fan or pump motor speed results in a motor using just 12.5% of the energy used at full speed.
  • Potential removal or locking of control valves, dampers, and other throttling mechanisms.

Eligibility and details

Approved rebate amounts are:

  • $60/horsepower (non-seasonal applications)
  • $40/horsepower (seasonal and HVAC applications)

To be eligible for rebate savings, adjustable-speed drives must be:

  • Installed on motors up to 500 horsepower.
  • Installed on motors used for centrifugal applications (mainly pumps and fans).

Rebates can't exceed 75% of your installation costs or annual electric bill amount. Larger motor installations or non-centrifugal ASD applications aren’t included by default, but may be considered for a rebate through our custom grants for efficiency program.
