Central air, ductless, or high-velocity offer efficiency.
Air conditioning systems aren’t one-size-fits-all. Instead, several options help ensure your building cools in the most efficient way.
If you have existing ductwork for heating, you can easily leverage it to distribute cool air with a central air conditioner. Central air conditioning systems are eligible for savings are available through our CoolSavings program.
Note: Due to a number of rebate programs and federal tax credit and incentive programs available, an air-source heat pump system (ASHP) may cost less to install than a central air conditioning system. ASHPs offer the same central cooling benefits along with efficient heating benefits. (Look for our heat pump program below to learn more.)
If your home does not have existing ductwork, you may want to go with ductless air conditioning.
Ductless air conditioning is quiet and compact. They are linked by refrigeration lines to an efficient outdoor compressor, and because they do not require ductwork they provide cooling without the need for a costly remodel.
Another way to install air conditioning without traditional ductwork installation is through high-velocity air conditioning, which distributes cooled air at speeds through insulated and flexible tubes placed between wall studs, in closets, and that can be worked to flow around obstructions.
High-velocity air conditioning allows you to reach every room without major remodeling, and is a used to upgrade historic homes.
Of course, more flexible options are also available—from traditional window and wall-mount air conditioners to portable air conditioner units.
