We create electricity from coal, hydroelectric, natural gas, oil, solar, and wind facilities. We also purchase electricity from the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, or MISO, energy market when buying it is more economical than generating it ourselves. This mix ensures reliable, low-cost, and increasingly clean electricity 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Merricourt Wind Energy Center is a 150-megawatt wind generation facility. Located in southeast North Dakota, it harnesses some of our nation's best wind resources to generate clean, low-cost energy. After years of planning and 17 months of construction, Merricourt Wind Energy Center started producing energy in December 2020.
In spring 2026 we completed wind repowering upgrades at our Ashtabula I, Ashtabula III, Langdon, and Luverne Wind Energy Centers, strengthening our energy generation mix while keeping costs low over the long term for our customers. Beginning in 2024, this project upgraded critical infrastructure to enhance our wind fleet. At $231 million, it’s the second-largest capital project in our company’s history.
With the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in August 2022, these four wind facilities, originally built between 2008 and 2010, were prime candidates for upgraded technology and tax credits to enhance performance and efficiency and reduce maintenance costs while improving reliability. We replaced major components such as blades, nacelles, drivetrains, and control systems while reusing existing towers, foundations, and transmission interconnections. The repowered facilities will generate approximately 171 additional gigawatt hours (GWh) of additional electricity each year, the equivalent of a new 40‑megawatt facility.
Tax credits, combined with the additional 171 GWh at zero fuel costs for renewable resources, help us maintain low-cost rates. Over the next ten years, the repowered turbines will generate more than $300 million in federal production tax credits, which more than offsets the capital costs for our customers.
