GIS Applications Specialist

Location

Fergus Falls, Minnesota

Responsibilities

In this role, the GIS Applications Specialist is responsible for the following activities:

  • Develop GIS workflows to add value to existing and new Company processes

  • Design functions and user interfaces for integration between GIS and other systems

  • Automate GIS tasks using programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, etc., as well as GIS API’s

  • Administer the GIS databases/servers to ensure functionality and integrity of the GIS system

  • Serve as GIS technical lead for system integrations

  • Administer education for field employees on data collection efforts including GPS equipment

Qualifications

To be successful in this role a bachelor’s degree in GIS is preferred, or an associate degree/certificate in GIS, or a minimum of three years of experience in GIS. The successful candidate will have experience in GIS database administration and advanced knowledge in ESRI GIS 10.5 or higher, working knowledge of ESRI database and server administration. Programming language experience such as Python, JavaScript, etc., and experience using GIS API’s is preferred.

Surveyor

Location

Jamestown, Devils Lake, or Rugby, ND or Milbank, SD - Hybrid remote opportunities available

Responsibilities

In this role, the Surveyor’s data, analysis and reporting will help determine how and where our system is built. Our successful employees ensure that our customers and communities have the power they need for modern life.

While few days will ever look similar in a Surveyor’s career, examples of those activities will include:

  • Obtain survey data for a variety of needs including utility mapping, GIS, substations, volume surveys, hydroelectric dam monitoring, and easement and boundary determination

  • Create preliminary and final design of power lines, overhead and underground, following guidelines of construction standards, engineering, and construction manuals

  • Develop drawings for design, construction, easements, boundaries, volume calculations, highway and railroad crossing permits or other documents as requested

  • Review and revise easements and legal descriptions from the Land Rights department prior to recording

  • Prepare and complete records of real property plats and certificate of surveys in accordance with state statutes

  • Overnight travel within Otter Tail Power’s service industry will be required and can vary from 1-10 days per month

Electrical Engineer

Location

Fergus Falls, Minnesota - Hybrid remote work opportunities available

Responsibilities

Successful applicant will perform short circuit and arc-flash studies, develop protective device settings, develop relay/control schematics for equipment, prepare/review electric system equipment specifications and provide technical supervision and leadership to electricians and technicians during construction of major substations. Overnight travel to all parts of the Otter Tail Power system is often necessary.   

Qualifications

For this position we require bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, with an emphasis in power or comparable work experience in some aspect of substation electrical engineering. We are looking for a talented team contributor that has excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills, self-directed time management skills, and working knowledge of the general operation of the electric transmission and distribution systems. Ideal candidate must be able to maintain a positive attitude, handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, be able to think independently, have strong problem-solving capabilities, and be stress tolerant.

Land Specialist

Location

Fergus Falls, MN or other locations in our service territory

Responsibilities

In this role, the Land Specialist will lead land and land rights acquisition and disposal. Our successful employees ensure that our customers and communities have the power they need for modern life.

Examples of those activities will include:

  • secure land rights through permits, licenses, easements, purchases and other agreements

  • conduct title research to determine which parties must be included in various project discussions

  • collaborate with various teams to determine line route selection

  • lead settlements of damage claims as applicable

  • Our service territory includes ND, SD and MN and travel, sometimes overnight, to various locations within those states will be necessary to be successful.

Senior Electrical Engineer

Location

Qualifications

This is an exciting technical position that includes both technical design and field implementation throughout Otter Tail’s service territory.  The position requires a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, with an emphasis in power, or comparable work experience in some aspect of substation electrical engineering.  Additional qualifications required for the senior level position include: (1) at least five years of specific design experience with substation equipment and P&C systems, (2) specific experience with design of SCADA systems, and (3) specific experience with substation construction and commissioning activities.  We are looking for a talented team contributor who has excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills, a demonstrated ability to be resilient by efficiently and timely managing multiple/simultaneous projects, and is detail-oriented.  Our ideal candidate will possess a positive attitude, be a self-starter with independent thinking and have strong problem-solving capabilities.

Applicants who do not possess the five years or related experience qualifications for the senior level position will be considered for an entry level position.

Journeyman or Well-qualified Apprentice Lineman

Location

Lisbon, North Dakota

Responsibilities

Successful applicant will maintain or repair overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems and substations; where necessary, frame and erect poles and attach necessary fixtures and equipment; string, sag and splice conductors (wires) and connect transformers and other equipment; trim trees, replace such equipment as broken insulators, split crossarms, cutouts, ties, faulty clamps or braces; perform similar replacement or repair work as necessary to clear up storm damage. Must learn to use electrical instruments, to operate hydraulic equipment and to work out of an aerial basket.

Qualifications

Applicant must have a diploma from an accredited line worker program and a valid unrestricted interstate commercial driver’s license. Must have knowledge of electric line construction, maintenance and repair; be able to work outdoors in any weather, be able to climb, have complete knowledge of safety rules and capable of getting along well with others. Successful applicant will be expected to reside within 17 miles from permanent headquarters in Lisbon, ND.

Administrative Assistant

Operations Engineer

Location

Fergus Falls, Minnesota

Responsibilities

At Otter Tail Power Company, our employees support the communities we serve by producing reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible electricity. In this role, the Operations Engineer studies and monitors the transmission system in real-time and near real-time to ensure safe and reliable operation of the transmission system.

The Operations Engineer will:

  • Build and maintain System Operation’s power system models for the regional transmission system.

  • Perform basic to complex power system studies to develop operating guidelines to support Real-Time Operations, identify power system limitations, optimize network topology, recommend voltage schedules, and support other Otter Tail Power Company efforts.

  • Acquire and maintain a NERC Reliability Coordinator certification.

  • Perform studies to calculate and analyze parameters used in the energy management system.

  • Report Otter Tail Power Company engineering information for electric system modeling to MISO, other regional entities and other companies enabling them to adequately model the Otter Tail Power Company transmission system.

  • Participate and represent Otter Tail Power Company in MISO, the North American Transmission Forum (NATF) and other regional operational planning groups.

  •  Assist in the training of the Power System Operators in the areas of power flows, restoration, and reliability.

  • Act as subject matter expert for various NERC reliability standards.

  • Occasional overnight travel is required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Attainment of NERC RC certification within 6 months of hiring.

  • Driver’s license and able to travel to meetings requiring overnight stays.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Detailed knowledge of the electric transmission and generation system components and how they work within the system. 

  • Working knowledge of power system simulation software, such as PSS/E, PSS/O, TSAT.  Knowledge of the real-time operation of the electric system, operating principles, NERC standards.
