Edison Electric Institute (EEI), an association of investor-owned utilities across the United States, developed many of the tests. EEI Practice Tests (login required) are available to help learn about and prepare for these pre-employment tests.

Standards Engineering Intern

Location

Fergus Falls, MN

Responsibilities

Otter Tail Power Company is currently seeking qualified student applicants to fill Standards Engineering Intern position from mid-May to mid-August 2017.

The duties of the intern may include:

Perform evaluations of various software solutions to consider as replacement of current Work Order Estimating System.

Perform evaluations of various software solutions to consider for use in communicating and archiving Construction/Material Standards Documentation.

Collection and updating of current estimating database data to best position OTP for conversion(s) associated with estimating system replacement. 

Work closely with area engineers, transmission design engineers, substation civil and system protection engineers as well as warehouse and customer service as required to facilitate job duties.

 

The position requires excellent organizational and written communication skills in order to draft reports and make recommendations based on economic and technical support.  Furthermore, the successful candidate will need strong oral communication skills and the ability to work together with people within the company.

Qualifications

Seeking students in the electrical or mechanical engineering curriculum with excellent oral and written communication skills. The applicant must have proficient computer skills with the ability to run various software applications and simulations including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access.  Some travel may be required.

Electrical Engineer Intern

Location

Fergus Falls, MN

Responsibilities

Otter Tail Power Company is currently seeking qualified student applicants to fill Electrical Engineering Intern positions from mid-May to mid-August 2017.

 

The duties of the intern may include:

Perform various technical analyses of the existing and planned transmission system in the upper Midwest in order to reliably serve our customers while maintaining efficient use of the transmission system.

Data gathering, system updates and supporting existing engineering staff with their on-going efforts. Some travel may be required.

Work with computer software simulations to conduct various types of transmission system analyses.

Utilize computer tools to monitor the performance of the transmission grid.  

Provide software support within the Energy Management System related environments. Duties may include software development, display building and maintenance and development of application and user documentation. 

Work closely with engineers, system operators and multiple departments as required to facilitate job duties.

 

The position requires excellent organizational and written communication skills in order to draft accurate reports and make recommendations based on economic and technical support.  Furthermore, the successful candidate will need strong oral communication skills and the ability to work together with people both within the company and with corresponding transmission counterparts at neighboring utilities.

Work Station Specialist Intern

Location

Fergus Falls, MN

Responsibilities

Otter Tail Power Company is currently seeking a qualified student applicant to fill a Workstation Specialist Intern position from mid-May to mid-August 2017.

Responsibilities include:

Work with the team that is responsible for the evaluation, requisition, installation, maintenance and support of desktop computers, notebooks, mobile devices, software, printers and other related peripheral equipment throughout the Company.

Package and deploy applications throughout the environment and troubleshoot and resolve issues with end user laptop/desktop computers, mobile devices, software and peripherals. Ensure customer request/issues tickets are resolved in a timely manner.

Coordinate with others in the department to resolve system problems. Acquire and maintain a basic understanding of the Local Area Network (LAN) setup/topology in order to troubleshoot issues for the end users, acquiring and maintaining current knowledge of relevant product offerings and supporting policies to provide technically accurate solutions to end users.

Work with the team to refresh end user laptop/desktop computers that have reached end of life.

Comply with company policies, procedures and external compliance requirements in performing job accountabilities.   

Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications

Looking for students in the computer science field of study.

Must have a good understanding of Windows 7 / Windows 10 operating systems in order to deploy devices and troubleshoot issues.

Must have a service oriented mindset.

Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work together with people throughout the company.

Lead Lineman

Location

Devils Lake, North Dakota

Responsibilities

Supervise, direct and work with the crew to erect and install, maintain or repair overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems and substations.

Qualifications

Must be a Journeyman Lineman with a diploma from an accredited line worker program or have equivalent experience. Must have an unrestricted interstate commercial driver’s license; positive leadership qualities and show an ability to plan, supervise and work with people and tools; an interest in teaching people working on the crew the lineman trade; thorough knowledge of electric line and underground construction, maintenance and repair; be able to work outdoors in any weather, able to climb, understand the mechanical equipment used in the trade, and have the ability to get along well with others. Successful applicant will be expected to reside within 17 miles from permanent headquarters in Devils Lake, ND.

Electrical Technician

Location

Jamestown, North Dakota

Responsibilities

Installs, tests, repairs and maintains many types of high and low voltage electrical, electronic, oil, air and hydraulic equipment and controls. This involves circuit breakers, reclosers, voltage regulators, capacitor switches, motor-operated switches, batteries and chargers, over-current relays, portable subs, transformers and all types of transmission, distribution and generation equipment.

Qualifications

This position requires a two-year associate degree in Electrical/Electronic Technology from an accredited school or company approved military training, correspondence or equivalent training and experience. It is essential that applicant have a thorough understanding of electrical and electronic schematics and diagrams, as well as mechanical ability to repair any type of equipment. Good judgment is required in making decisions in emergency situations. Some overnight travel may be required. Successful applicant will be expected to reside within 17 miles from permanent headquarters in Jamestown, North Dakota.
