Otter Tail Power Company is pleased to offer paid craft internship opportunities at the Big Stone Power Plant, located near Big Stone City, South Dakota. This full-time internship is for 12 to 16 weeks during the summer of 2018. 

Big Stone Plant is offering internships in the following Power Plant departments:

Operations Department (Energy Operations) – two internships

Yard Operator Department (Heavy Equipment Operator) – one internship

Applicants must be a full-time 1st year student in a technical college program offering training in these craft disciplines. Candidates must successfully complete a physical examination and background check.

Lead Cost Accountant

Location

Fergus Falls, Minnesota

Responsibilities

Maintain controls of the overall capital projects process from determination if a project is eligible for capitalization to proper plant-in-service classification. Review and transfer of costs accumulated in our completed capital construction projects to plant-in-service. Ensure the on-going accounting integrity of the work order estimating system as it relates to capital vs. expense accounting. Research, recommend and implement enhancements to the Power Plan Fixed Assets system. Monitor active capital projects for current activity and closure of completed projects on a timely basis. Monitor and analyze payroll loadings and associated accounts and prepare monthly journal entries. Assist with month end financial closing processes.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance or equivalent is required. Professional certification preferred but not required. Preferred candidates must have knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and knowledge of the FERC Uniform System of Accounts. Knowledge of the life cycle of a capital project from initiation to classification as plant-in-service is desired. Knowledge of capital budget systems and fixed assets tracking systems is preferred. Advanced Excel spreadsheet skills, including data extractions and pivot tables is a must. Analytical, statistical, attention to detail, and communication skills are required to work effectively with internal and external parties.

Electrical and Instrument Technician

Location

Hoot Lake Plant, Fergus Falls, Minnesota

Responsibilities

Responsible for maintaining the following equipment: electric auxiliary and pneumatic drives, electric and digital controls, programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), variable frequency drives (VFD’s), transformers, breakers, precipitator, relays, voltage regulators, batteries, motors, lighting, general plant wiring and electric equipment, all electronic equipment, phone system, parts of locomotive, AC and DC systems, RTD’s, thermocouples, radio controls, continuous monitoring equipment, IRD system, all transmitter and transducers, strip charts, actuators, solenoids, controllers, some valves, devices measuring temperature, flow, level, pressure and other instruments and equipment needed for plant operation, and other assigned duties.  Must be able to troubleshoot, read prints, use testing equipment and work without supervision at times.  Should know about oils, bearings, machining and hydro operation. 

Qualifications

Position requires a minimum of two years technical school with a degree in Electrical, Electronics or equivalent. Must have a good understanding of electricity and pneumatics. Should have a thorough knowledge of boilers, steam and hydro operations. Must know basic theories involved in the steam and mechanical areas of a plant. Applicants will be required to complete an aptitude inventory.

Journeyman or Apprentice Lineman

Location

Canby, Minnesota

Responsibilities

Erect, maintain or repair overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems and substations; where necessary, frame and erect poles and attach necessary fixtures and equipment; string, sag and splice conductors (wires) and connect transformers and other equipment; trim tree, replace such equipment as broken insulators, split crossarms, cutouts, ties, faulty clamps or braces; perform similar replacement or repair work as necessary to clear up storm damage. Must learn to use electrical instruments, to operate hydraulic equipment and to work out of an aerial basket. Perform these and such other related work in a manner consistent with all Company safety rules and use equipment and protection as required. This sentence does not supersede the provisions of the Labor Agreement.

Qualifications

Must have a diploma from an accredited line worker program and a valid unrestricted interstate commercial driver’s license. Must have knowledge of electric line construction, maintenance and repair; be able to work outdoors in any weather, be able to climb, have complete knowledge of safety rules and capable of getting along well with others. Successful applicant will be expected to reside within 17 miles from permanent headquarters in Canby, MN.

Financial/Rates Analyst

Location

Fergus Falls, Minnesota

Responsibilities

Prepare and analyze forecasted financial statements and official company budgets as required. Administer financial software (Utilities International) used for preparing and analyzing financial forecasts/budgets including any applicable rider recovery tracker responsibilities. Provide analytical support as needed in the completion of the jurisdictional cost of service studies used in determining potential rate case filing needs. Determine how to handle new accounting rules as they arise and determine overall utility returns for actual and forecast years, as well as prepare exhibits, testimony and answer information requests during rate cases and any other regulatory filings.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or a related field with two + years of experience. Professional certification not required, but encouraged. Must have an understanding of utility accounting and financial operations necessary to analyze and complete timely and accurate financial forecasts and revenue requirement calculations; maintain and administer spreadsheets and the budget/forecast software; analyze and strategically think to effectively evaluate financial implications of business decisions and the impacts they have on revenues, expenses, and cash flows. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are required. Must have knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), the FERC Uniform System of Accounts and be familiar with the Federal tax code.

Service Representative/Lineman

Qualifications

Applicants must be sufficiently qualified as a Journeyman or well qualified Apprentice Lineworker and be able to do necessary emergency repair work.  Must have knowledge of electric line construction, maintenance, and repair. Must be able to assume responsibilities for area operations, maintain favorable public relations, and supervise and instruct assistants as necessary.   Must have a diploma from an accredited line worker program or have equivalent experience. Must have a valid unrestricted interstate commercial driver’s license. Successful applicant will be expected to reside within 17 miles of permanent headquarters in Britton, SD.
